A president of Palmeiras, Leila Pereira, once again criticized John Textor, owner of SAF Botafogo. The president, who was heard this Wednesday (05) as a witness in the CPI of Match-fixing and Sports Betting, said that the loss of the Rio team in the last Brazilian Championship was "due to his (Textor's) incompetence". The two teams will face each other in the round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Libertadores. "I have a lot of freedom to speak about John Textor. Why? I have deep respect for Botafogo, Botafogo fans, but I was elected president of Palmeiras to defend Palmeiras. I cannot let anyone disqualify two titles of Palmeiras. You know how difficult it is to win a Brazilian Championship, one of the hardest in the world," she began. "I know the work we have at Palmeiras, the coaching staff, players, my work... I cannot let a foreigner come to Brazil and, because he lost a title due to his inability, and the ability of Palmeiras, disqualify this very important title. My remarks are about John Textor's attitude, not about Botafogo and the fans," she added.
Textor has cited possible manipulations in Brazilian football. The businessman questions the fairness of some matches played in the last edition of the Brasileirão. "He needs to prove what he is saying. Palmeiras has requested a police investigation to investigate the allegations. If he proves it, okay, people need to be punished; but if he does not prove it, he is the one who needs to be punished," said Leila. "So far, I have not seen any evidence. I have no doubt that John Textor should be banned from football. With these irresponsible, criminal allegations, it affects all the credibility of this product, which is Brazilian football. Penalties need to be harsh," she concluded.
Other disagreements This is not the first time Leila Pereira has criticized John Textor. In April, also in the context of Textor's statements about possible manipulations in Brazilian football, the president of Palmeiras called him a "charlatan". "Look, folks, if you think about it, my statements are not strong. I speak the truth. It is difficult to speak the truth in football. It's philosophical. This is Friedrich Nietzsche, you know? How much truth can you handle? I speak the truth. Who is John Textor? He is the shame of Brazilian football, he is a charlatan," she said at the time. "He must be punished exemplarily. A owner of Botafogo's size cannot spread news and fallacies without any evidence. What does he mean? Is Brazil not a serious country? Do the authorities take no action," she added. Days later, in an interview on the Roda Viva program, the president reiterated that she had filed a lawsuit against the businessman and called him an 'idiot' for his behavior. "In the courts, with regard to Palmeiras, we have already filed a civil action against him (Textor) and requests for the opening of a police investigation to investigate these allegations he is making, because he continues speaking, speaking, speaking, and proving absolutely nothing. I think it's an outrage, it's a shame," she said. "There's no point in wondering what goes on in his head, I know what goes on in his head. This gentleman, excuse the expression, is an idiot. What this John Textor is thinking is that Brazil is a mess, that the authorities take no action. To curb this, this man must be banned from Brazilian football," she concluded.
